“Always remember that your best is good enough. We spend too much time comparing ourselves to others.”
Executive – Forensic & Investigation Services
On Friday 6th January, nine Norwich High alumnae who had all left within the last seven years, were invited back to the school for the first ‘Inspiring Females of the Future’ event to share their experiences of life after A Levels with our Sixth Formers.
The afternoon comprised of a panel Q&A session where our leavers answered questions set by girls about their lives after Norwich High and the challenges they have faced in the early stages of their careers. One leaver even joined us via Skype to join the panel!
The girls then took part in workshops designed to help them consider the pros and cons of different paths after secondary education.
They discussed together the benefits of work experience, professional qualifications, apprenticeships, taking a gap year or going straight to university.
The event gave the Sixth Formers girls a fantastic opportunity to talk about their futures with young women who have been through the same transition.
Wellbeing, confidence and coping under pressure were central themes of the afternoon.
Professions/areas of study represented included foreign languages, costume design, history, the Civil Service, law, healthcare, business and marketing.
Emma Venier who left school in 2014 and is currently studying Spanish and linguistics at the University of York, highlighted the importance of wellbeing: “Keep on top of your mental health, it’s something you really need to be aware of. Look after yourself and take care of each other.”
Alexandra Madsen, who left the school in 2009, is now an audiologist at the NNUH. Her advice was to “Embrace every opportunity. Whatever comes your way, enjoy the path, and don’t worry too much about where you’re headed.”
Thank you to all of the girls, both past and present, who were involved in shaping this inspirational and fun event.
