Plants use seasonal cues – such as the long cold of winter – to know when to start to flower. Caroline’s team at the John Innes Centre in Norwich have worked out how plants know they have experienced a winter – which involves a memory mechanism similar to that in humans.
“I was fascinated by the TV shows where Jacques Cousteau explored marine biology which first sparked my interest. Doing lab experiments at university made me interested in going into research.”
